Before you travel

Pre-existing medical conditions

If you have an existing medical condition, please check before you travel that you are fit to travel and that your situation falls within the policy terms. Emergency medical treatment overseas is covered, but routine treatment, buying regular medication overseas, or travel against medical advice may not be covered.

  • Speak to your doctor to confirm you are fit to travel if you have an existing condition.
  • Obtain a confirmation letter from your doctor stating you are fit to travel.
  • Bring enough regular medication with you for the whole trip.
  • Do not travel to seek treatment for a known condition.
  • If you are unsure, ask before you leave.

What is a "Pre-Existing Medical Condition"?

(a) Any illness, injury, medical or dental condition, disease or disability for which treatment, medication or advice (including advice for treatment) has been received or prescribed by a doctor in the twelve (12) months immediately prior to the covered person's journey; or

(b) The symptoms of any illness, injury, medical or dental condition, disease or disability which a reasonable person in the circumstances would be expected to be aware were caused by an underlying condition at the time of booking their journey.

If you have a condition fitting the above definition, as long as you have received confirmation from your doctor that you are fit to travel, no further underwriting is required and cover will be provided, subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Frequently asked questions

I take medication for a pre-existing condition. Do I need to notify the insurer?

Provided your doctor has confirmed you are fit to travel, there is no requirement to notify the insurer. However, please bring an adequate supply of all necessary medication for the duration of your trip, as replacement medication purchased overseas is not covered.

Do I need to disclose pre-existing medical conditions?

No, provided your doctor has deemed you fit to travel and provided you with a letter of confirmation. You should still carry sufficient medication and documentation for your condition.

I am pregnant. Will this insurance cover me?

Yes, coverage is available; however, it is limited to Medical Expenses, Emergency Evacuation and Additional Expenses. This provides cover for emergency treatment, provided you are not travelling against medical advice.

What happens if I require medical assistance and have consumed alcohol?

The policy does not specifically exclude medical claims where alcohol has been consumed, and cover may still apply for medical expenses arising from injury or illness. Please note no cover is provided for claims involving a rental vehicle or incidents if your blood alcohol level exceeds the legal limit at the time and place of the incident. For further details, please refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

What happens if my belongings are lost or stolen?

If your belongings are lost, please provide supporting evidence such as photos of the items and a report from the relevant location (e.g. hotel or shopping centre lost property report). If your belongings are stolen, you must obtain a police report as soon as possible. We strongly recommend taking photos of valuable items prior to departure.

Do I need to arrange my own travel insurance?

No. Travel insurance is automatically provided for all staff and partners attending the conference - no action is required on your part.

Can I take out my own travel insurance?
